THE AMAZING JOURNEY

OF THE SPECIES Anguilla anguilla

Elvers are the fry of eels, teleost fish that live much of their life in the rivers of Europe. When they are adults, eels descend the rivers towards the sea to begin their eight-month journey through the Atlantic Ocean until they reach the Sargasso Sea in the Caribbean, where their reproductive process takes place. There they mate, spawn and die. Within a few days the eggs hatch and the young in the form of leptocephali are born, which, moved by the Gulf currents, undertake the way back to the European coasts, which they will be able to reach after between two and four years. As they approach less saline waters, they undergo a metamorphosis that transforms them into elvers, which go up the rivers to preserve the peculiar and epic life cycle of their species.
